Something wicked this way comes…. To the Somerville Public Library!
To celebrate our 10th year of Somerville Reads, we’ve chosen a spooky read just in time for fall: the classic horror novel The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.
Curl up with this creepy classic and a hot beverage, then come to one of our book groups and discuss!
We are excited to offer a variety of programs throughout the month of October inspired by themes found in the novel. Here’s what you can look forward to:
- Learn about the history of the spiritualist movement in our community in a talk with local author Dee Morris.
- Pumpkin painting for kids and pumpkin carving for adults, with apple cider and treats at our Harvest Festival!
- Come to GrownUp StoryTime at Remnant Brewing and hear all about Spooky Somerville.
- Be spooked at our Scary Movie Night, where we’ll screen The Haunting - the 1963 adaptation of The Haunting of Hill House.
- See if you can Escape from Hill House in time in our thrilling escape room!
- Find out what the future holds with a card reading in our Tarot Workshop.
Stay tuned to all of the spooky happenings by following the Library on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
“Somerville Reads” is a citywide reading initiative that encourages all Somerville residents to read and discuss the same book to promote literacy and community engagement.
You may remember some of the titles we’ve read in the past, including Exit West by Moshin Hamid, El Deafo by Cece Bell, The Witches by Stacy Schiff, The Martian by Andy Weir, and Dark Tide: The Great Boston Molasses Flood of 1919 by Stephen Puleo. We encourage everyone in Somerville to read the title by the end of the month!
You can find copies of the novel at any of our locations, or through the library catalog. Call the reference desk at 617-623-5000 ex 2955 to reserve your copy!
