We are missing our patrons and we hope you haven’t forgotten what we look like! Maybe you are one of our patrons who would come in and head to the third floor balcony to find a cozy spot to do your work. Here’s a fun library fact for you, there wasn’t always a third floor balcony! That’s right, the Central Library went through a major renovation in its past. The renovation began in June 1975 and the library was reopened July 1, 1976.
Some of the new features of the library included a third floor balcony, a new entry way into Wellington Hall, and an elevator. Some other modern systems and updates were also done to the building. According to the City of Somerville’s 1975 Annual Report, “At the end of this year the Central Building Project is 35% complete. New steel beams, floors, plumbing, heating and ventilation systems and a new roof have been installed.”
Our patrons loved the new and improved library! In the 1977 Annual Report, Library Director Annalee M. Bundy wrote, “With the close of our first full year operating from the newly renovated Central Building, we are pleased to record that public response has been excellent. There are more borrowers than ever before registered, and circulation is above our last best year before renovations.”
